Some cats struggle with constipation from the foods they eat, minimal water intake, or other health reasons. The vet can prescribe laxatives but you may want some home remedies as well. I will share a handful of ways to help get your cat feeling more like themselves and using the bathroom on the regular. If by chance none of these work, then it might be time to head to the vet and get your cat feeling better.

How To Know If Your Cat Is Constipated

If you happen to see your cat trying to use the bathroom and they appear to be straining, that can be a big indicator they are having issues. Another sign is seeing minimal waste in the cat litter or very hard stools. Some cats might even cry out when they are trying to go because it hurts.

Other Signs:

  • Bloody or really dark stools
  • Small stools
  • Lethargic
  • Acting like they are in discomfort whether sitting or walking
  • Vomiting
  • Little to no appetite
  • Weight Loss

5 Ways To Help Relieve Cat Constipation

If your cat shows no signs of improvement or acts worse, you need to call or head to your vet. Some of the constipation signs could be other underlying sicknesses that could be making your cat appear they are constipated when they might be sick. Your vet can look your cat over and if they can’t get relief from home remedies the vet can prescribe a laxative or stool softener.

Make sure your cat is getting enough water each day. Just like us, if we don’t drink enough it can cause constipation. Try giving fresh cold water to help entice your cat to want to drink.

Canned food is a great route, it generally leaves your cat with looser stools than when they eat dry food. Mix it in with their dry food to see if that can bring your cat relief.

Pureed pumpkin is full of fiber and vitamins and is great for helping with cat constipation. You can buy the canned puree, just make it isn’t pumpkin pie filling. It needs to be a straight pumpkin puree. Mix a teaspoon with some of their cat food once a day.

Another great idea is Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Just add a little drizzle over their food and let them eat. It is a quick and easy way to help loosen things up and get things moving in the gut department. Do this up to twice a day if they badly backed up.

Getting your cat to play and be active is a great way to help work things out. Just like us sometimes having some activity is good. Now if your cat is acting sick they may not have the energy to want to play, but for cats who aren’t super miserable, it could be a good option.
