While Halloween can be a joyous time for little kids, it can be dangerous for your cat. Sadly, black cats that roam around outdoors can experience some of the hardest and most dangerous moments around Halloween. If you have cats be aware of the Halloween dangers for cats and learn how to keep them safe. Don’t just think Halloween is dangerous for outside cats, even indoor cats need to be monitored around Halloween! That tasty candy you bring home can be toxic for your furry feline. Read these tips and learn how to keep your cat safe. I highly recommend microchipping your cat if you haven’t done so already. Keep your cat safe and know where they are at the end of the day.
Black Cats and Halloween
Sadly, black cats get such a bad rap around Halloween. If you have a black cat that goes outdoors be aware that some people might harass or even harm your precious cat. To most this makes no sense, but to some people, they have it out for black cats especially around Halloween time. Some people will even kill a black cat if they see it, thinking it is evil. So make sure if you own a black cat to keep it indoors or create a safe place for it.
What Halloween Dangers For Cats Might You See?
Scared or Frightened
If you have cats that roam outdoors, they might become more anxious or panicked as the traffic of kids out trick or treating alarms them. Also, sometimes costumes can make your cat feel very scared. If you can, try to find a safe place for your cat to stay for a few days leading up to Halloween so they are not out roaming and get scared. Otherwise, you could end up with them running too far away from home and getting lost. Or even someone taking your cat home with them.
Cat Costumes
I love a good cat costume but you have to know not all cats like to wear costumes. If your cat fights it, consider passing on the costume. Or if you see them chewing on the costume, be aware of what they are doing. Your cat could chew off little pieces of fabric and choke very easily. Also, if you do put a costume on, ensure it fits properly and doesn’t restrict airflow.
Indoor Cats
If your cat gets scared easily consider putting your cat in a room that is away from the front door while you hand out candy. Make sure to have their litter box, toys, food and water if they need it. Or you can step outside and sit on the front porch to greet your trick or treaters so it doesn’t disturb your cat through the night.
Candy
Candy is definitely one of the Halloween dangers for cats. Make sure to be aware of all the candy that you have on hand to give out or your kids bring home. Candy can be toxic to cats, especially chocolate. But even sugary candies can make your cat very ill and might require a vet visit. Keep your candy sealed up and out of reach.
Signs Your Cat Might Have Eaten Chocolate:
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Lethargy
- Seizures
- Fever
- Stiffness in Muscles
- Rapid Breathing
- Coma
- Weakness
- And more
Jack O’ Lanterns
Those decorative jack o’ lanterns sitting on your front porch can be fun but you have to be fully aware if you own cats. Don’t leave your cat alone with a jack o’ lantern that has a candle lit inside, as they could play with it and get burned or knock it over and start a fire.
