How to Eliminate Cat Urine Odor & Keep the Cat!

We love cats, right? But, let’s be honest, some of their scents linger and most of the time we get immune to it. However, when we have visitors, it can be overwhelming for them.

How to Eliminate Cat Urine Odor from the Litter

The litter box can be the number one culprit to those cat odors you might be smelling. Below are ways to eliminate cat litter odor.

  • Make sure to clean your litter box daily! Or clean it more than once a day if you would like.
  • Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the litter box, this can help soak up some of the urine odor.
  • When you clean the litter box, toss all the waste in a plastic bag, and then take to the dumpster outside. Don’t toss it in your kitchen trash, because you will not be removing the urine odor from your home.
  • Use unscented litter, a lot of the scented litters just mask the smell.
  • Replace your cat boxes, at least once a year to every six months. They trap in bacteria and no matter how well you clean them, you can’t get urine odor out. You can buy cat boxes for a few dollars at the dollar store.

Eliminate Cat Urine Odor from Furniture

Sometimes your cat may choose to spray on your furniture, a certain spot on the carpet, or even your walls. Regardless of where, the reason could be they are marking their territory by spraying, or they don’t like their litter box. They also could be bored or acting out. If you don’t clean the litter box enough, that can be a reason why your cat searches for other places to go.

If you find that your cat has sprayed or marked, here are some ways you can clean up the spots to eliminate cat urine odor, in hopes that your cat won’t return and do it again.

Enzyme Cleaners: Nature’s Miracle Just for Cats Urine Stain & Odor Remover and X-O Plus Odor Neutralizer/Cleaner are two of the best enzyme cleaners to use when cleaning up potty spots. Enzyme cleaners are a biological compound that helps speed up chemical reactions. They help break down the stains easier, and remove the urine odor, so your cat won’t come back and mark the same spots over and over.

White Vinegar: If you find a urine spot on your carpet that is still wet, try this route. Blot the area with a rag to draw up as much of the urine as possible. Then mix equal parts of white vinegar and cold water, and pour a good amount over the urine stain. Blot up all the liquid you poured on the stain, and then let it air dry. Once dry vacuum over the area. The vinegar will help neutralize the urine odor because it contains high acidity!

Air Purifiers and Filters

It is recommended to replace or clean your furnace filters every month to every couple months. Filters trap in fur and pet dander, and this can clog your filters, which can then cause a smell in your home.

Also, you can buy air purifiers that help reduce allergens in the air. You can buy all different sizes of purifiers that you can place in high traffic rooms. They will soak up odors and allergens in the air, making your air in the room cleaner.

Vacuum Often

Make sure you are regularly vacuuming your home! This can help a ton in reducing odors in your home! Plus if your cat sheds, you can stay up on the hair getting stuck on the couch and chairs. Cats have dander in their hair, that can be a cause of the smell and make allergies flare. You can even sprinkle baking soda onto the floors before vacuuming to help soak up odors. Just let it stand for 15-30 minutes and then vacuum like normal.

Wash Cat Bedding

Make sure if you cat has a bed that you wash it regularly. Like any cloth item, if not washed over time it can begin to collect bacteria and cause odors in the home.

These are all simple but yet effective ways to eliminate cat odors in your home!
