If you’re wondering how to stop your cat from biting, you’re not alone. All cat owners who are dealing with this issue are wondering the same thing.

Having a cat who bites isn’t fun. Especially if you have children or younger ones in the house that it happens to. And when you’re worried about how your cat is going to affect them and their future love of cats, you need to do what you can to take care of the cat biting issue now.

The good news? There are ways that you can address how to stop your cat from biting in a way that is helpful for everyone in the house. Here are some simple tips to “nip” your cat biting issues in the rear.

How To Stop Your Cat From Biting

Believe it or not, cats can be trained and learn how to not bite. But in order for it to work, you have to be consistent on your end as well.

  • Tell your cat “no”

When your cat bites, you need to be firm in your “no”. Do this over and over again and they just might start to get the hint. If there are other people in your household, make certain that they’re doing the same as well.

If someone in your house isn’t telling the cat “no” when it bites, then it’s going to get confused and just continue to do so.

  • Get your cat some toys

There can be a lot of reasons why cats actually bite. Maybe their teeth hurt or maybe they’re just a bit ornery. Or, if you rescued your cat or don’t really know about its history prior to living with you, it could also be the fact that your cat maybe didn’t ever get reprimanded when it was biting its other owner in the first place.

If your cat is wanting and needing something to chew on, don’t let it be you. Instead, go out and get some good cat toys that your cat can chew on instead. You’ll be amazed at how it’s just wanting to play around and wrestle with something. And when it has toys, it can take out its chewing aggression on that.

  • Don’t use your hand to wrestle with the cat

I know, I know…it’s totally tempting. But if you’re going to rough house and play with the cat, they’re more than likely going to rough house and play right back with your hand…or the hand of anyone else after that as well.

Playing with your cat is fine, but when you’re doing so in a manner that gets them all riled up, they’re going to do what they have to do to defend themselves and that includes biting your hand, if necessary.

Above everything, pay attention to when your cat tends to bite. If it’s when they are playing, then this is an indicator that they need toys. If it’s when you’re walking by, then it’s the fact that they’re wanting to chase your toes which basically again leads to the fact that they need toys..and if they’re biting you for no reason, you might need to talk to your vet about behavior issues and what you can do to stop that from happening.
