Owning a Cat 101

Wondering if owning a cat is right for you? These basic tips need to be on your radar if you’re trying to make that decision.

First and foremost, I must say…owning a car is awesome. (or, in my case- multiple cats) People tend to throw around the connotation “crazy cat lady” like it’s a bad thing, but really, it’s not.

Cats are one pet that will keep you on your toes and always have you guessing. And when you’re looking for a great pet that will constantly have you scratching your head and theirs, cats are where it’s at.

When it comes to owning a cat, be prepared for a roller coaster of a ride. And I mean that in a good way. Cats are so much fun to own!

  • Cats love to cuddle when they want to

Just because you might want to sit down and cuddle…don’t expect your cat to be ready. Snuggle time is on their time and their time only. They make the calls, you just provide the petting.

  • Cats prefer to drink fresh water from the water bowl daily

I know what you’re thinking….you’ve probably caught a cat or two drinking water from the toilet at one point in time or another but it’s true…they love fresh water. This is why you’ll catch them up in the sink as well trying to get in a few delicious sips, too!

  • Keep a lint roller handy in every room

Just face the facts. Cat’s shed. But overcome it by having a handy dandy lint roller is reach all the time. There’s nothing that a few rolls of a lint roller can’t handle.

  • Splurge on the expensive litter

If you can, do. It’s worth it in keeping the odors at bay and that means that you’ll spend less time smelling and changing it and more time trying to find new ways to snuggle with your cat instead.

  • Shut the door quickly and tightly behind you

While your cat may love to be indoors, they will just have a natural curiosity of trying to run outside. And this means every single time that you’re coming and going, you need to move in and out of the door quickly.

  • Understand that you’re got a best friend for life

The truth is when you decide that owning a cat is right for you, understand that you’ve got a best friend for life that will always be right by your side.

And there’s really nothing quite like that amazing feeling of having a hairy little feline as a loyal and sometimes moody buddy.

One great way to figure out if you’re ready for a cat is to foster one and see. Talk to the local animal shelter or humane society in your area and see if they have any cats that you can foster for a short time.

That way, you’ll get the hang of it and decide if owning a cat is right for you!

Do you have any advice for anyone who might be on the fence about owning a cat?
